As part of our 'Beat the Heat' campaign, we're providing expert advice on how to stay cool in the summer heat. Here's our top 10 tips.

  1. Wear lightweight, breathable PPE: Choose workwear that's designed to be lightweight and breathable. This helps reduce heat buildup and keeps you comfortable without compromising safety.
  2. Stay hydrated: You've probably heard it before, but it's amazing how often people forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration. You also need to avoid caffeinated or sugary drinks as they can make it worse.
  3. Take regular breaks: Be sure to schedule regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas to cool down. This helps prevent overheating and maintains productivity.
  4. Use cooling accessories: As well as lightweight workwear, you should also consider using cooling towels, neck wraps, or vests that can be worn under your PPE. These accessories can help lower your body temperature.
  5. Monitor weather conditions: A favourite British pastime. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and plan your work schedule accordingly. And avoid working during peak heat hours if possible.
  6. Adjust work pace: It's hard to do when you're in full flow, but slow down your work pace during the hottest parts of the day. This helps reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
  7. Wear moisture-wicking fabrics: Choose PPE made with moisture-wicking fabrics that draw sweat away from your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable.
  8. Use sunscreen: Never underestimate the strength of the sun, especially on a cloudy day. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin to protect against sunburn. Sunburn can increase your body temperature and make it harder to stay cool.
  9. Stay alert for heat stress symptoms: Be aware of the signs of heat stress, such as dizziness, headache, nausea, and excessive sweating. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek shade, hydrate, and seek medical attention if needed. And that goes for your colleagues, keep an eye on each other.
  10. Educate your team: Everyone is responsible for monitoring heat stress, but it helps if they know what to look out for. Whether you are a team leader or not, ensure that all members are aware of the importance of staying cool and hydrated. Your company should provide training on recognising and responding to heat-related illnesses.
