Why should you dispose of your PPE sustainably?

It's important to consider your company's waste output and the environmental impact of improper PPE disposal. Choosing a sustainable PPE service can help limit the amount of PPE waste your company produces. In June 2024, the UK Government wrote off or destroyed approximately £1.4 billion worth of PPE. This not only represents a staggering amount of waste, but it also demonstrates how improper practices can harm the environment. When purchasing PPE, it's crucial to consider its longevity, recyclability, and the correct procedures for disposing of it in a sustainable manner.

Our recycling and disposal service is not just a service but a step in the right direction for PPE recycling.

At Tower Supplies, sustainability is integrated into all of our PPE services. We offer safe and secure PPE disposal, the CtrlCloud smart-ordering platform, and our HELM consultancy service to cut down on over-ordering and waste. We can help your PPE work better for your business and ensure its sustainable disposal after it has served its purpose for a long time.

How does the service work?

When your garments are collected, depending on the cleanliness and materials of the products, they will either be recycled into more garments, used in textiles and insulation, or reduced down to a sustainable source of energy.

In order to despatch PPE waste for recycling, we need to follow the correct procedure for disposing of used PPE. One way we do this is by using a waste hierarchy system, developed by industry leaders Avena, to maximise the amount of workwear and PPE recycling we can conduct using a three-tier system.

To meet the demands of modern PPE waste disposal, we have a tailored approach with our recycling system and separate your items into categories to increase their chances of recyclability.

Our 3 tiers of PPE recycling

Tier 1: We reuse your textiles for future manufacturing

We could reuse textile materials and fabrics to make more future workwear and textile products, thereby extending the product's overall lifespan and limiting the waste that would have ended up in landfills.

Tier 2: We recycle your old workwear and PPE materials into something that can be used again

We could, for example, make used workwear into geotextiles, partition walls or insulation that can provide vital support as a material.

Tier 3: When we cannot recycle the material, we melt your old materials to make polyester fabrics or turn them into energy (RDF)

This route ensures that your PPE and workwear waste does not end up in landfills, providing a completely zero-landfill solution to PPE waste disposal.

What PPE does our recycling service accept?

We accept all used PPE garments and uniforms for recycling if they are of reasonable quality. Our 3-tier system categorises and tailors our recycling options to minimise impact and eliminate waste. When a garment is mechanically shredded, the fabric scraps are used for another purpose, contributing to a more circular approach to garment disposal.

Our multi-site recycling solutions

Whether you have one site or multiple, our PPE recycling service includes the collection of your PPE textiles to be recycled. We can arrange to collect your PPE on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis.

Why is recycling PPE important?

Recycling is one of the most important things businesses can do. Not only does it reduce landfill waste, but it also encourages a more environmentally conscious and responsible industry.

Workwear recycling is crucial to the circular economy and preserving our natural resources. Tower adheres to the ISO 14001 Environmental Standard, ensuring environmental processes and improvement.

As a PPE supplier, we offer solutions to facilitate the recycling, reusing, and repurposing of PPE products. We also carry items made from recycled and reused materials, including hi-vis clothing, reusable overshoes, and reusable face coverings.

Workwear

Hi-vis

We have hi-vis made from recycled clothing (Ecovis) available, made from 100% recycled polyester with 50% less emissions and less carbon dioxide.

Products

Overshoes

We have a reusable and washable overshoe that replaces 14kg of plastic per year. These overshoes boast 75% more grip than regular plastic.

PPE

Face coverings

When you don’t need to meet the safety standard of a medical device mask or PPE respirator, reusable face coverings can be washed up to 50 times.

Why choose our PPE recycling for your business?

Brands should opt for a specialised PPE disposal and recycling service because sustainability is the future, and the time for sustainability is now.

Choosing sustainable practices can help build brand recognition and authority across industries. Therefore, recycling is essential, and as a modern supplier, we strongly recommend it in today’s eco-conscious climate.

At Tower Supplies, we offer a diverse range of sustainable products, and we have a well-established reputation as a leading and accredited supplier of PPE supplies and workwear.

Get in touch with us today, and we can help you set up a regular recycling service. However, if you are also interested in learning more about the recycling process, we’ll be happy to talk with you.
