Are you choosing quality over quantity?

I explain the benefits of prioritising cost-in-use (the annual cost of product ownership across a set period), over up-front cost. I want to prove that this simple method of product analysis is not only good for your budget, but for the wellbeing of staff too.

The problems with a price-first approach

Buying workwear or PPE based on the lowest upfront cost is not the best approach. It's unlikely to be of the highest quality (heard the saying "buy cheap, buy twice"?) and may be affecting the wellbeing and safety of your staff. Not to mention the impact it can have on the image of your company brand.

You don't choose better quality products for a fancier trim or a label. In the majority of cases these products are made from stronger material that resist fading during washing, less prone to damage, and often provide a higher level of protection. But more importantly, they last longer. That means they need replacing less.

Annual cost comparison

535.193 KB

The above document compares the annual cost of owning a budget hi-vis polo shirt with a premium polo shirt. It takes into account wash cycles and average product lifetimes (as per manufacturer's guidance).

You will notice that although the initial cost of the premium shirt is 55% higher than the budget shirt, the annual cost of ownership of the premium shirt is actually over 60% LESS than the budget one.

You can only imagine applying this thinking to all the products you buy. And if you have staff numbers in the hundreds or even thousands, the savings could be substantial!

The other benefits of choosing quality over quantity

I hope I have shown you how choosing quality over quantity when buying PPE and workwear can have long term financial benefits (working with an expert supplier will optimise these calculations for you).

But there are more benefits. Studies show that when staff are comfortable and happy when wearing their workwear and uniform, they are more likely to feel proud of the brand they represent.

Staff that love their PPE workwear and uniform are also much more likely to consistently comply with regulations. This improves safety standards across the company.
